What Do We Use When Providing Ultrasound-Guided Injections?
A combination of anti-inflammatories and local anaesthetics is used to treat patients.
Our anti-inflammatories include –
Cortisone – A manufactured version of the hormone cortisol and works by stopping the release of molecules that cause inflammation.
Hyaluronic acid – Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly and helps improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to worn cartilage.
The options only consist of one drug – Cortisone. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally sourced and therefore not considered a “drug”.
What To Expect From An Ultrasound-Guided Injection Treatment
You are provided with a consultation before treatment to discuss your condition and personal medical history.
Before performing an injection, an ultrasound scan of the affected area will be performed to ensure the correct diagnosis and identify a safe delivery path. An ultrasound gel is applied directly onto the skin, which allows the soundwaves to penetrate the skin and gives us a clear view of the anatomy.
When we are ready and an initial visual has been performed, we direct the needle very precisely to the area we want to treat and inject the site with the chosen drug.
The treatment is quick, and your appointment should take no longer than 30 minutes.
For those coming in for a second appointment or ongoing treatments, your appointments are reduced to 15-20 minutes.
The treatment is instantly effective, which means you should have no problem returning to work or escorting yourself home after your appointment; however, we would advise you to arrange transport, especially for those having treatment on the knee joints.
How Many Injections Do I Need?
Treatment plans depend on the condition, personal medical history and choice of medicine. Currently, the NHS recommend a limit of three injections per year with at least six weeks between each treatment. But, again, this can be discussed prior to treatment.
How Long Will My Ultrasound Injection Last?
On average, pain relief can last around 6-12 weeks, depending on the circumstance. Avoiding strenuous activities and maintaining a healthy weight increases the success rate and, in turn, helps towards a more extended period of being pain-free.
Our physiotherapy team will also be able to guide you through your treatment plan with helpful exercises you can do at home to ensure a more prolonged period between treatments and provide a successful recovery from injury.
